Online Blackjack Strategy

Blackjack is a simple yet engaging game that is an excellent introduction for card game novices. Whether it is played for money or simply for fun, Blackjack is easy to pick up but requires a skillful eye to know when to stand, and when to take a risk.

Blackjack Strategy

Strategy can play a role in Blackjack simply for the number of choices the player is offered. While a basic strategy will often be helpful to newcomers, its main purpose lies in being a guide simply because of the large factor chance plays in the game. Strategy guides for every possible Blackjack situation you could find yourself in are readily available online, with the most common form of Blackjack being a game involving three or more decks, where the dealer stands on soft 17, doubles on 2 point cards, and where blackjack pays off at 3:2. This is the style of Blackjack that will be found in most casinos.

The player’s strategy will alter with each new hand, so it is advised that you familiarize yourself with basic Blackjack strategies before jumping into your first game. Since you are only able to see the dealer’s face up card, there are often several different strategies to take depending on the value of that face up card. For example, if the value of the player’s hand is the ambiguous 16, and the dealer’s card is worth between 2 and 6 points, then the player should stand, as the dealer will have to risk his own hand by Hitting in order to beat the player’s score of 16. However, if the dealer is holding a card worth 7 points or more, the player is recommended to Hit, as there is a chance that the dealer’s cards will be worth at least 17 points. In addition, if the option of Surrender is available, the player should accept if the dealer’s face up card is worth 9 or more points.

While there are several different strategies for each hand depending on the dealer’s face up card, there are some card values in which one specific option is the only sensible play. For instance, if a player draws cards to the value of 8 points – no matter what face up card the dealer holds – they should always call a Hit as there is no chance they can Bust on the next card. Similarly, if the player’s hand is worth 20 points – no matter the dealer’s card – they should Stand, as the chance for their next card being an ace is ridiculously low. Finally, a player should always Split his cards and play two separate hands if he receives two aces, doubling the chance of blackjack.
