Blackjack is the most popular online casino game. While it is an easy casino game to learn, it requires some skill, a basic understanding of Blackjack strategy, and a bit of luck in order for you to get the most value for your money.

How to Play Blackjack

Typically, Blackjack consists of a number of players – ranging from one through to seven – each facing off against the dealer. Depending on the casino, the game will often be played using three to four shuffled decks of cards, jokers removed. Cards 2 – 10 are worth their own number (e.g. 3 of hearts is valued at 3 points, 10 of spades is worth 10). Face cards are all valued at 10 points, and aces are worth either 1 or 11 points, at the player’s discretion. Suit also has no bearing on the value of a card. The aim of each round is to beat the dealer by having a hand worth as close to, but no more than, 21 points.

The game begins when all players have placed a bet within their respective betting squares. Two cards will then be dealt – one face up, one face down – to each bettor as well as the dealer. In some casinos only the dealer will have a face down card, with all player cards facing up. Unless the dealer has blackjack, turns will then be taken for each player to Hit, Stand, Double Down, Split their cards, or in some cases Surrender.

In the United States, if the dealer’s face up card is an ace or a card worth 10 points, the dealer will check to see if they have blackjack straight away. If they do in fact have blackjack the dealer will immediately collect all bets except those who also have blackjack. If the dealer’s face up card is an ace or 10-point card, but he does not check to see if he has blackjack, he will offer players the chance to take insurance on their hand. Only after the offer of insurance has been given to everyone will the dealer check his face down card.

After the two cards have been dealt the player will typically choose to either Hit or Stand. If the player feels they can improve on their points total without a high probability of Busting (exceeding 21 points) they will Hit. Tapping the table or saying, “Hit” will earn you another card. The player may Hit as many times as they please until they either Bust or wish to Stand. Standing will stop the flow of cards, and the dealer will move on to the next player until all bettors have completed their round.

In addition to Hitting or Standing, the player also has the option to Double Down. This option is only available after the first two cards have been dealt (or after splitting), and may be selected if the player feels they will win the round with their next card. The player’s bet will be doubled and their chance to win will rely solely upon their next card.

Splitting the hand is often the final option a player is given after the first round of dealing. The option to Split is only available to a player if their two cards are worth the same points. Both cards will be played as separate hands, and the player will have to place a second bet of equal value to the first bet.

It is also wise to note that some casinos will offer the option to Surrender after the first cards are dealt. The player may choose to Surrender if they feel that their hand has a very high probability of not winning. The player will have to forfeit both their cards, and half of their initial bet.

After each bettor has Busted or chosen to Stand, the dealer will reveal their face down card and play out their own hand until there is a clear winner or winners.
