Spanish 21 Blackjack
Online Spanish 21 Blackjack
Spanish 21 (also known as Match Play 21) is an extremely popular online casino game that offers players a different Blackjack experience with good return percentages. In other parts of the world, such as Australia, Spanish 21 has been altered slightly and renamed Pontoon.
Spanish 21 Rules
The actual progression of the game plays out like any other standard Blackjack game; it is just the rules and payout system that are different. Therefore, I will explain the most important factors that distinguish this variant as a separate game to Blackjack. If you would like to know how to play Blackjack, simply take a look at our “How to play Blackjack” page.
In many ways Spanish 21 is similar to Super 21. For example, in both games a player 21 always wins. Additionally, a player blackjack will always beat a dealer blackjack.
Doubling and Surrendering are much more commonplace in Spanish 21 than regular Blackjack; players may Double on any number of cards, and after Splitting. The chance to Surrender during hands is offered, and an option known as “Double Down Rescue” is available as a Surrender after Doubling. If this is the way the player decides to go then they will forfeit an amount equal to their initial stake.
Because the game is played with Spanish decks of cards (a standard deck of cards with the 10s removed, making a 48-card deck), there are several extra bonus hands that offer some lucrative payouts. The first of these are multi-hand 21s. So long as the hand is never Doubled, a player can win on the following: a 5-card hand of 21 which pays 3 to 2; 6-card 21 which pays 2 to 1; and 7-or-more-card 21 which pays 3 to 1.
Other bonus payouts include: a 6-7-8 or 7-7-7 which pays 3 to 2 unsuited, 2 to 1 suited, and 3 to 1 if all are spades. Once again, these payouts are only available if the hand has not already been Doubled.
Spanish 21 Strategy
As with most Blackjack games, a strategy card is the best source of guidance when playing at online casinos. They advise players what to do in every possible circumstance they may find themselves in when playing the game, and Spanish 21 has several strategy cards created specifically for it. The following strategy card is quite self-explanatory and should help new players find their feet, as well as guide them in the right direction for creating their own personal playing style.

Spanish 21 History
Spanish 21 started popping up around Las Vegas in 1995 as a variation of traditional Blackjack. It began to gain notoriety after gamers realized that it offered several exciting bonus payouts to remedy the extra house edge as a result of the 48-card Spanish deck. Currently, Spanish 21 is owned by Masque Publishing, Inc., and can be found in standard and online casinos all over the world.
